Maytime Mayhem Friday 20th May 2011

The Full House Orchestra opened our May concert at St. Lawrence Church, Heanor, with Handel's Water Music conducted by Robin. Following on with Clog Dance conducted by Thomas while Robin took up his viola.
Alex and Lorraine on clarinet. Alex and Lorraine on clarinet.

Lorraine and Alex played the solo clarinets parts for this piece. We always like to encourage members to perform solos at our concert and it was wonderful to have so many willing musicians. The standard of playing was extremely high, congratulations to all our soloists and to those who played duets. Alex at the piano

Rebecca was first and played Andante by J.S. Bach, on flute, accompanied by Alex on piano. Alex stayed at the piano as he then accompanied Kate who sang Franz Schubert's Serenade.
Rachel and Thomas played what should have been a flute duet, but as Thomas had left his flute back in Stoke it became a flute and piccolo duet of Somewhere Out There, by James Horner. Frankie then gave us a lovely rendition of Meditation by Jules Massenet accompanied by Robin on piano. Tiffini finished this solo section with two pieces played on the harp. Thomas our conductor.

Time to strike up the band as our wind section, conducted by Thomas Coxon played Sentimental Journey and The Pink Panther.
Two more solos came next with Tiffini now playing flute and then Kate at the piano playing Paganini's Variations. The Full House Wind Band closed the first half of this concert with The Big Country.

The interval with Tea, coffee and cakes was followed by the raffle.

And so onto the second half of the evening's entertainment. It was now the turn of our String Section to 'strut their stuff' as they played Ragtime, Serenade and Rumba followed by a finger numbing piece called Pizzicato Polka.
It's always nice to welcome back old friends and so when Margaret said she was available to play oboe for us we were delighted. Margaret also played with our guest recorder group - Too Many Fs, they played two pieces, Saltarelle and Bink's Waltz.

Time for another group of solos, duets and trios, starting with Frankie and Daisy playing The Piece with no Name. Alex then returned to the piano and played Nocturne No.20 by Frederic Chopin. Fran, Thomas and Heather then got together to play The Londonderry Air. Having played a flute duet in the first half Rachel now played a violin solo called Somewhere.
Josh at the piano.

The final soloist for this concert saw Josh at the piano as he played part of Hungarian Rhapsody No.2 by Franz Liszt.
Time once again for the String Section from The Full House Orchestra to take their seats for 'Afternoon' a piece for strings, written by Robin, it is from 'The Village Suite'. We are looking forward to hearing the whole piece, once the strings have mastered it.
The orchestra
As we approached the end of this concert all players returned to their places for our finale, with Robin conducting Mr Blue Sky and then The Great Gate of Kiev with conductor Thomas.
This piece had been causing a few problems during rehearsals but true to form the orchestra played it magnificently when it really counted.
Well done to you all.

We had a few thanks and gifts to present at the end.
Flowers went to Marie, who always gets the kettle on and brews the tea during rehearsals.
A bottle of bubbly to John and Rosie for running the tuck shop, wine for Thomas for his help with arrangements and conducting and also flowers for Rachel our leader.
Thank you to our guest players who came along on the evening - Margaret on oboe, Thomas on cello and Heather on flute. Also a big thank you and good luck to those from Derby University who have supported us over the last few months - Beth on clarinet, Kate on violin, Alex B. on clarinet, Laurisha on trumpet and Alex C. on piano.
Janet & Robin receive flowers and wine.
Janet and Robin would like to thank the members and parents for all their support throughout the years and really appreciated the gift of wine and flowers they received at the end of the evening.
